Cataract Falls

The trail to Cataract Falls (also known as Fighting Creek Nature Trail) is relatively short, measuring just 1.2 miles (1.9 km) round-trip, and is considered an easy hike suitable for visitors of all ages and skill levels. The trailhead is located just off Fighting Creek Gap Road, near the Sugarlands Visitor Center in the park.

The trail follows a gentle, meandering path through a lush forest, with occasional openings offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The creek that gives the trail its name runs alongside the path for much of the way, providing a soothing soundtrack and a refreshing source of water for wildlife and visitors alike.

Along the way, hikers are likely to spot a variety of flora and fauna, including wildflowers, ferns, and towering trees such as tulip poplars and hemlocks. The area is also known for its abundant bird life, with species such as Carolina wrens, woodpeckers, and warblers commonly seen and heard throughout the hike.

Cataract Falls can be seen at the turnaround point of the hike. Measuring approximately 25 feet (7.6 meters) in height, the waterfall cascades over a series of rocks before pooling at the base of the falls. The waterfall is particularly beautiful in the autumn, when the leaves of the surrounding trees turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. However, the beauty of the falls can be taken in at any time of the year.
